FREE VIRTUAL PRESENTATIONS

During the coronavirus pandemic we wanted to help parents and teachers that were home schooling to keep their children motivated, focused and entertained during an extremely difficult time.

Throughout Lockdown 3 we delivered free virtual and pre-recorded sessions with over 50 primary schools from Fife to Folkestone and from Exeter to East London. Engaging with over 3,000 children from age 5 to 11 (and a few senior schools too), we answered their questions, showed them our Antarctic kit and loved their enthusiasm for our favourite subject. Some comments from the teachers are at the bottom of this page, and the Antarctic Explorers talks also featured on BBC South East.

PRE-RECORDED VIDEO SESSION

Unfortunately, we’re no longer taking bookings for free virtual talks, but a pre-recorded video of our Antarctic Explorers session is free to use for both parents and teachers at any time. The 30 minute session is aimed at 5 - 11 year olds and compares Scott and Amundsen’s expeditions with the Ice Maidens’ contemporary Antarctic journey.

The video can only be watched with a password in order to protect our copyrighted material, please do contact us for the password.

“Through a live video link, Sophie was able to captivate and energise the whole of Key Stage 2 with stories and footage from her incredible Antarctic journey. Delivered in a truly inspirational manner, Sophie not only transported the children from lockdown to Antarctica, but along the way she taught them vital lessons in teamwork, resilience and friendship, and ultimately encouraged them to aim high and dream big. I have no doubt that Sophie’s lesson will have an incredible impact on the children and staff of Smarden for many years to come.”

“Thank you Sophie for delivering an absolutely fantastic live video session. The children and the staff were mesmerised by the stories and pictures from the Ice Maidens’ Antarctica expedition. The experience was enhanced by being able to ask Sophie questions and the children loved seeing some of the equipment she used. The children were encouraged to think about “What’s your Antarctica?” and learning from Sophie’s experience allowed them to think outside the box. The session made the children think about teamwork and resilience and who knows, maybe one day they will be doing the same journey that Sophie and her team took.”

Thank you Sophie! You spoke to us whilst we were battling through our fifth week of distance learning. Outside it was a grey, wet February in lockdown, we needed to escape, and you took us all on an adventure with you.. You reminded us that all challenges can be conquered, all obstacles overcome through determination, humour and friendship.

When our Zoom call finished you left Year 3 with a new sense of determination, with the positivity to overcome whatever the world might hurl at us. We learnt a lot about Antarctica, but we learnt even more about how amazing humans can be! From the children, teachers and the many parents who were listening off screen, thank you!
